Week 1 — God's Big Idea > Question 9

Because of Adam and Eve's act, sin has infected the human race. Jesus has now come — the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world, once and for all. Yet, we still live in this time between Jesus' death on the cross and his victorious return. As followers of Christ, in what ways are we free of our sin nature? In what ways are we not yet free?

As Christians, we have been freed from the control of sin. According to Romans 8, "...you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you." When we are faced with temptations, God will provide a way out so that we do not have to sin. However, we still have the sinful nature living inside of us. Romans 8:12-13 says, "Therefore, dear brothers and sisters, you have no obligation to do what your sinful nature urges you to do. For if you live by its dictates, you will die. But if through the power of the Spirit you put to death the deeds of your sinful nature, you will live." This shows that we as Christians still have to battle our sin nature, but through the power of the Holy Spirit, we can have victory over it.
